Joel Schalit is a writer and editor based in San Francisco. An Israeli-American pundit noted for his unique views on Middle Eastern politics and US culture, over the past fourteen years, Schalit has produced four books and contributed to numerous periodicals including Alternet, France 24's The Observers, the San Francisco Bay Guardian and XLR8R.
The former managing editor of Berkeley's Tikkun magazine and associate editor of Chicago's Punk Planet, Schalit served two terms as the co-director of the world's longest running online publication, Bad Subjects: Political Education for Everyday Life. He is currently serving as the editor of international news and blogging portal, Allvoices.com, and is the Media editor of the New York Jewish monthly, Zeek. Schalit's fifth publication, Israel vs. Utopia, is forthcoming from Akashic Books.
Educated in Israel, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, he holds a BA in Religion from Reed College and an MA in Philosophy from the Graduate Theological Union. Schalit engaged in his doctoral work at York University in Toronto.
